Description:
The traditional spirit of hospitality, which rules the Cistercian order, pervades the Domus Sessoriana within the Monastery of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. It is situated on the slopes of the Esquiline Hill, a stone's throw from the centre of Rome. The Domus Sessoriana is the only hospitality centre in the world, standing within a complex of buildings with 2000 years of history, pervaded with the sense of ancient Rome and Christian tradition. The building is divided into two wings: The Conventual Wing: This wing forms part of the Monastery and consists of three levels occupied by the Hall, the Refectory and other finely furnished rooms of various sizes. Some of the rooms are part of the 16th century structure, others on the upper floor have rooftop views over the gardens of Rome and those of the Monastery itself. The floors are connected by a windowed lift, allowing inspection of the important 19th century paintings. There are 60 bedrooms of various sizes with traditional tiled floors and furnishings, bathrooms with shower, air-conditioning, wheelchair access, satellite TV, refrigerator-bar, room safe, telephone & internet. There is a "bed and breakfast" buffet, banqueting/meeting halls and a terrace overlooking Rome. Keen joggers can take advantage of the gardens by the ancient Roman walls. The Palazzina Wing: The Palazzina extends towards the area once occupied by the Imperial Amphitheatre. Its five floors have been entirely renovated and tastefully furnished. They are reached by a lift and the bedrooms command views over the Roman archaeological remains and the baroque Piazza Santa Croce. The Domus is beside the Church House of Santa Croce, which has a tenniscourt and volleyball ground. The Domus Sessoriana contains a Hall, with a fine traditional fireplace, ideal for meetings, or working lunches, for up to 50 persons. The Breakfast Room can easily be adapted for meetings, or working lunches for up to 80. Smaller rooms are available for more intimate groups. Other venues can be arranged within the architectyral complex, or its immediate vicinity. The Domus can provide audio-visual equipment such as digital & overhead projectors, microphones, amplifiers and computers, in addition to secretarial services.
